He was canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II, who declared Saint Josemaría should be "counted among the great witnesses of Christianity." † Saint of the Day † (June 25) ✠ St. William of Vercelli ✠ Founder/ Abbot: Born: 1085 AD Vercelli, Italy Die: June 25, 1142 Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, Italy Venerated in: Roman Catholic Church Feast: June 25 Patronage: Irpinia William of Montevergine, or William of Vercelli, was a Catholic hermit and the founder of the Congregation of Monte Vergine, or "Williamites". He is venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Biographical selection: St. William was born in 1085 at Vercelli in the Piedmont region of Italy to noble and wealthy parents. When he was still very young, he determined to renounce the world and become a hermit. He built his first hermit’s hut on Monte Solicoli and then went to Monte Vergine. Many disciples came to him there, attracted by the sanctity of his life and many miracles he performed. It would be interesting to analyze the aspects of St. John the Baptist’s life that characterize him as a perfect Apostle of the Last Times, as described by St. Louis Grignion de Monfort. Not because his times were the last times, but because they were the last times of that era. † Saint of the Day † (June 24) ✠ St. Rumbold of Mechelen ✠ Christian missionary/ Martyr: Born: Not known Possibly Ireland or Scotland Died: 6th, 7th or 8th century AD Mechelen Venerated in: Catholic Church Western Rite Orthodoxy Major shrine: St Rumbold's Cathedral in Mechelen Feast: June 24 Patronage: Mechelen and Humbeek Saint Rumbold was an Irish or Scottish Christian missionary, although his true nationality is not known for certain. He was martyred near Mechelen by two men, whom he had denounced for their evil ways. Saint Rumbold's feast day is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church, and Western Rite Orthodox Churches, on 24 June; and it is celebrated in Ireland on 3 July. He is the patron saint of Mechelen, where St. Rumbold's Cathedral possesses an elaborate golden shrine on its high altar, containing relics attributed to the saint.
