Following in the footsteps of the English missionary St Boniface, Ludger, who was a native Netherlander, brought the faith to the people of Frisia in Holland and the Saxons of north-west Germany. She was pressed to death for refusing to enter a plea to the charge of harbouring Catholic priests, and canonised in 1970 by Pope Paul VI. The turmoil which followed the Reformation created an array of martyrs on both sides of the religious divide.
